Jaune is the 2021 edition with a golden yellow apple in the black hat. In 1970 the Chilean painter Roberto Matta designed Magritta for Gufram as a tribute to René Magritte. Two of Magritte’s recurring motifs, the bowler hat and the green apple, become one seat: a black hat with the apple set into its crown as the cushion. The name joins the two surnames, Magritte and Matta.
A firm polyurethane structure holds a soft foam cushion, and both are upholstered in elastic bouclé wool. Matta’s original colourway pairs the black hat with a green apple; in 2021 Gufram added two editions, Jaune and Rouge. The upholstery is done by hand, so each piece differs slightly.
With its low, wide form, 84 cm wide and 59 cm high, Magritta sits somewhere between armchair and pouf, and works as well as a sculpture on the floor as a seat. The other colours are Magritta Vert and Magritta Rouge.
